A local fishing report is a valuable tool to fishermen and to boaters who spend time on the water. Fishing reports help with the planning of when, where and if conditions are favorable for fishing or boating. Most local newspapers print local fishing reports of lakes and in the coastal regions, of conditions of coastal waters which is usually 20 to 50 miles offshore. . The internet can also yield several reports by using a search engine of your choice.

Local fishing reports from the internet are sometimes from local guide services; which also can be helpful but they may not be updated often and will be outdated. Fishing reports are usually valid for 24 to 36 hours since the conditions will change in that time period especially if there has been a change in the weather. Most local fishing reports will have the following items in them:

Water Temperature
Water clarity
What species of fish are being caught
What type of bait or lure that is most successful for the caught fish
Weather report for the next 24 to 48 hours
Water levels of the lake or river in the area.
Wave heights and wind speed ( usually found in coastal and off shore reports)

By reading fishing reports often and using a map of the area, you can plot any patterns of where the fish are being caught and plan a trip using the information gathered and any other useful information that you may have for that particular body of water. By reading fishing reports published by guide services, you can fish in the areas that they use for your benefit.

Boaters can also benefit from using local fishing guides since boaters also can use the information found on conditions mentioned above to maximize their enjoyment on the water. If, for example, a lake or river had lower than usual water levels a boater can estimate the depth of the water and make a decision on the safety of the proposed route. Also, if the water was cloudier or murkier that usual; that would make it harder to see any possible semi submerged hazards that may exist in the water. If a boater was planning to go in the coastal waters or offshore, wave heights and the forecast wind speeds are valuable pieces of information when planning a trip. If wave heights are too high, it can create a dangerous situation that can either damage the craft or possibly injure the boaters. Wind speed affects how a boat moves through the water and also influences the wave action. By influencing how a boat moves through the water, wind speed affects how well a boater navigates to the planned destination.

Local fishing reports are an effective tool when planning any activity on the water. By doing a bit of planning and research the reports can yield an abundance of information to increase everyone's enjoyment of the water.
