The Oktoberfest festival in Munich Germany began October 17, 1810 when Prince Ludwig I married Princess Therese from Saxony-Hildburghausen. In the fall of 1969 she became lonesome for her native country of Germany and so decided to have a small Oktoberfest of her own. She and her husband decided to sell cups of beer for 50 cents near the Larimer Square information booth. She did not realize she needed a permit to sell the beer. When this was discovered she began giving away the beers during this first Oktoberfest on Larimer Square, and plans for the following year were underway.

The next year, Hertha and her husband, Fred grew the event and soon it was a must have festival each year with the local German community as well as others who enjoyed having a good time on Larimer Square on an autumn day. Oktoberfest Denver is now attended by over a quarter-million people each year and has been going on now for 35 years.

The annual Denver Oktoberfest is scheduled to take place October 5, 6 and 7 of this year. Friday’s festival is from 5:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., Saturday is 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. and Sunday is NOON to 6:00 p.m.

“Beer Jug Relay” Oktoberfest Party Game

This Oktoberfest party game is a great one for when everyone has partaken in a few ales! It needs to be played outside, as it could involve getting wet if you’re not careful. All that’s needed for this game is 4 large buckets, 2 beer jugs and a fairly long area in which to play the game. Before the game, fill 2 of the buckets and place them side by side at the starting line, and place the 2 empty buckets side by side at the finish line. Players split into two even teams and line up, with the person at the head of each line receiving a beer jug. The object of the game is for players to fill their team’s bucket at the finish line, by taking turns to transfer the “beer” from one bucket to the other. The trick is, each player must do this by filling the jug and balancing it on the palm of their hand as they walk down. The first team to transfer all their “beer” is the winner of this Oktoberfest party game.

“A what?" Oktoberfest Party Game

This is also a great game for when festivities are well underway. After a couple of beers, guests won’t know their “whits” from their “whats”. All that’s needed for this game is 2 small objects, for example a knife and a fork. Guests sit in a circle, and the two objects are given out randomly. The game starts by one of the players holding an object passing it to the person on their right, saying “This is a whit”. The person on the right replies “A what?” to which the first player responds “A whit”. This question-and-answer routine continues halfway around the circle, at which point the second object – a “watt” – is added to the circle and sent around in the opposite direction. Anyone who confuses their “whits” with their “watts” or their “whats” must leave the circle. The last 2 players left are the winners of this hilarious Oktoberfest party game.

It doesn’t get any better than an Oktoberfest party. Oktoberfest began in 1810 as a wedding party in honor of King Ludwig I, of Barvaria, and Maria Teresa of Saxonia. A state fair was proclaimed, and the tradition of the Oktoberfest Party began. Traditionally held from September 9th through October 29th Oktoberfest the festival was dedicated to the fall harvest and the regions most famous product, beer. It has been held annually ever since.

In Germany and many parts of the world Oktoberfest has become a large festival with plenty of food, beer, music and merrymaking. Huge tents set upon the Theresienwiese meadow in Munich are the setting for the festivities. The event begins with the mayor ceremoniously tapping the Oktoberfest keg of beer.

Throwing your own Oktoberfest party is easy and fun. Setting up tents, roping off areas for dancing, plenty of music, women in white aprons and men in suspenders, traditional food and beer, and you have an Oktoberfest party! Just send out invitations early, get organized by deciding if the party will be catered, or if each person will be bringing dishes for a pot luck, and that is left to do is have fun!

Traditional chicken dance at your Oktoberfest party: Anyone who's not chicken, stands in a circle facing each other. When the music starts, hold your hands out in front of you, and open and close them four times, like a chicken beak then, put your thumbs in your armpits, and flap your wings four times. Place your arms and hands like the tail feathers of a chicken, and wiggle down to the floor four times. Clap four times, and repeat steps one through four, four times each. After the fourth time, take the hands of the people on either side of you, while everyone moves in a circle. When you get dizzy, switch directions. Repeat this until the end of the music, or until you fall on the floor.

Traditional Food and Drinks for an Oktoberfest Party: The name of the game is indulgence. A keg or two of German beer, and traditional foods such as German sausages, hot German potato salad, sauerkraut, sweet and sour cabbage, German-style chicken, and yummy black forest cake rounds out the Oktoberfest party menu. Oktoberfest and Oompah bands go together like good German beer, German Sausage and good friends. Oktoberfest is a traditionally German festival with world-wide appeal. Every year millions, yes millions, of people enjoy Oktoberfest both in Germany and abroad.

The largest Oktoberfest celebrations are held in Munich the capital of Bavaria in Germany. And rightly so as this was the area where the original Oktoberfest celebrations took place. To examine the roots of this now mammoth extravaganza we must travel back to the start of the 1800's and the wedding union between Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to his bride the Princess Therese of Saxony-Hilburghausen in 1810. In-order to share in the couple's happiness, celebrations which included an agricultural fair, horse racing, food and beer were arranged to take place on grounds which became known as Theresenwiese which translates to Therese's fields. Through time, Oktoberfest has taken the local slang name 'Wies'n'.

During the late 1800s carousels and other fairground attractions started to be added and the humble beer stands started to be replaced by the huge beer tents that are such a feature of the modern day Oktoberfest. Today's Oktoberfest is almost as famous for the excess as it is as a celebration. Millions of litres of beer are drunk in the huge circus sized beer tents and latterly these have been sponsored by the major breweries serving their own labelled beer and providing entertainment and endless quantities of food. Nowadays it is not unusual to see the brewers advertising material alongside the traditional blue and white chequerboard decoration of Munich.

The beers of Oktoberfest nowadays are concentrated on two styles; Light beer or Pils which is referred to as Helles, the German word for light and the more traditional Oktoberfest darker beer or Dunkel, you've guessed it, the German word for darker. There is even a special Oktoberfest beer called Wiesnbier which is even darker and more potent than Dunkel.

All of these beers are traditionally served in a 1 litre stein, a traditional glass beer mug. Made from heavy glass to prevent too many breakages it is a sight to see the serving waitresses charging around the beer tents carrying numerous full steins in each hand. Definitely somebody you wouldn't want to get in the way of. It is usual to see these waitresses dressed in traditional costume.

A trip to the Munich Oktoberfest is a once in a lifetime event but for many those who will not make it, Oktoberfest will still be celebrated. There are thousands of local Oktoberfest celebrations being planned from small domestic parties through to whole town celebrations. If you don't know of one of these, plan your own. It's easy as many local stores and internet retailers have traditional German costumes and Oktoberfest decorations readily available. Some good quality beer, some pretzels, some sausage and some good friends - a perfect celebration.

Fraudster's baby is rolling in cash

A fraudster who took a photograph of his baby son surrounded by bank notes stolen in a card-cloning scam was today beginning a five-year prison sentence.

Adu Bunu, 34, was convicted yesterday by a jury at Hull Crown Court of cloning more than 2,000 cashpoint cards and milking the victims' accounts.

He netted £43,000 by cloning cashpoint cards, but had the potential to steal more than £1 million, police said.

Detective Sergeant Neil Clarkson from the Humberside Police Economic Crime Section, said: "This was obviously a well organised card cloning operation where more than 2,000 card details were recovered.

"Although not all card details had been used, if they had all been used, then according to the banking guidelines, he had the potential to recover more than £1 million.

"In the event, in excess of £40,000 was obtained by the defendant affecting hundreds of people whose details were used in this operation."

Bunu targeted cashpoint machines at two East Yorkshire supermarkets in Beverley and Willerby, Hull Crown Court was told.

The cloned cards were then used to withdraw money from other ATMs across the country.

Bunu, a Romanian, was arrested at his home in St Oswald Road, Wakefield, on January 29 this year.

He claimed the picture of his baby son surrounded by money was part of a Romanian tradition celebrating the christening of a child.

But the jury dismissed his claims and took just one-and-a-half-hours to find him guilty of conspiracy to clone bank cards.

Bunu, who police believe worked with an accomplice who is still being hunted, fitted false fronts to cash machines which were able to record both the magnetic strip identifying cards and pin numbers typed in by their owners.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Welton, from Humberside Police, said: "This was the first time Humberside Police has worked with the DCPCU (Dedicated Cheque and Plastic Crime Unit) and this investigation has demonstrated that, in all inquiries similar to this, there is a need to work as a wider team with specialist groups.

"The DCPCU is a bank-funded team of police officers who are based in London and deal with this work all the time. Their expertise was vital to us in order to successfully conduct this investigation.

"Furthermore, I am extremely grateful for the co-operation and assistance we received from members of the public who provided a large amount of intelligence to us in response to early media appeals.

"We will now be involved in further investigation to try and trace and recover the proceeds of Bunu's crimes."

Interesting Facts Japan

Clothing

Japanese tend to be much more formal in clothing than Americans. On this trip, men wear a coat and tie and women wear dresses or suits. It is recommended that I bring dress shoes that slip on and off easily because I must change into slippers when entering many places I visit. Even though some locations (such as schools) provide guest slippers, I have been told that I should bring my own slippers because the guest slippers are too small in size for Americans.

While I am required to be dressed up for the official occasions, I will get chances to wear informal, comfortable clothing. However, shorts, halter-tops (for women - not me!), or cut off jeans are generally considered sloppy and indecent, as are sleeveless shirts in some areas.

Since I'm limited to the amount of clothing I can bring, I'll need to wash some of my clothes in Japan. Here is where it gets really interesting! One suggestion is to bring a few feet of string and some small clothespins to hang wet laundry in the bathroom. In some hotels, bathrooms are equipped with a line above the tub.
Paper towels

Many public places in Japan do not provide paper towels in restrooms so I will need to bring an absorbent handkerchief and small packets of tissue paper with me...Sounds like this will be a blast!
Weather

Temperatures vary depending on where you are in Japan. Despite the small size of the country, winds from Siberia hit the northern part of Japan, so the north is cool even in the summer, while the southern tip of the archipelago is semi-tropical and quite humid year-round.

October is typically a dry month throughout Japan although some typhoons may appear in early October. Fall is considered the best season to visit Japan because of mild temperatures, less humidity, and beautiful foliage.

During the Host City visits, many participants find that school buildings are not kept as warm as they are in the U.S. (I bet my room is colder though!).
Smoking

In Japan, you may encounter situations where there are many people smoking in public places, offices, restaurants, or even in schools. The same awareness of health risks that exist in the U.S. is not as prevalent in Japan. Although awareness is increasing in some Japanese communities, generally the same anti-smoking laws have yet to be passed.
Water

Tap water is safe to drink in Japan, although the taste in some areas may be different from what you are used to drinking. In urban areas, the water may contain a high concentration of chlorine. Japanese in these areas often filter their water before drinking. Rural areas may have less chlorine. The water in Japan does not contain fluoride. Mineral water including major imported brands can be easily obtained from supermarkets and convenience stores.
Business Cards

It is recommended that I bring 50-100 business cards (with one side in English and the other in Japanese, if possible). Wherever I go in Japan, I will exchange "meishi" (business cards). People treat them as extensions of the person. So, when I give my meishi to someone, I do not hand it casually or toss it to him/her. Rather, when I receive a card, I need to accept it with both hands, then read it and carefully put it in my pocket or card case. Never write on it in front of the person since this defaces it and is considered rude.

When Is Your Leather Naked And Other Interesting Facts?

Some leather clothing is represented by a certain weight or thickness, but what
exactly is 3 1/2 oz. naked cowhide? And why is leather weight an important
consideration when making a jacket or other leather clothing purchase?

The material used in manufacturing a leather garment is available in different
weights. You will notice in some of our product descriptions a notation about
leather weight. The weight of leather is determined by the number of ounces
that one square foot of material weighs. For example, if a square foot of leather
weighs three ounces, it is called 3-ounce leather. It would also be approximately
one-eighth of an inch thick. The stated weight loosely translates to a particular thickness of leather. Higher weights means thicker leather and increased protection on the road.

Cowhide is the most common skin used to produce leather garments and can be treated with protective finishes such as waterproofing or acrylic paints which sometimes leads to a shiny finish called Patent Leather. Without such treatment we refer to the material as naked cowhide. Since cowhide is the thickest kind of hide to begin with, a full range of thicknesses are available from 12 ounces (3/16 inch) to 1 ounce (1/64 inch).

Even The Emperor's Clothes Were Cool

This history of leather conveys just how fascinated people were regarding the many uses of leather. Leather transcends time and class. It has been used by ancient empires, Victorian England and working class people.

During the Roman Empire, Caesar's troops sailed across the seas, their ships capturing the wind in sails made of leather. Leather has been in widespread use since its first
introduction in 3000 BC by the Egyptians.

They are credited for discovering leather as an excellent material for use in battle and household furniture. It was utilized for tents and weapon carriers as well as body armor.

As early as 4000 years ago, Egyptian women prized leather for fashion. Trading parties found the hunters of the Nile Valley willing to trade their panther and leopard hides for beads and fabrics. Small barges transported the hides hundreds of miles upriver to the waiting designers of the Egyptian fashion world.

Many civilizations, including Ancient Greece and Rome continued to explore many uses for leather. Goatskins were used to make maps, and hand-stitched pigskins were filled to carry drinking water.

Arabs settling in Spain introduced decorated leather to the region. The wall hanging of Cordova enjoyed international renown. In the 15th century, Spanish leather was used to cover walls and floors and to upholster armchairs and sofas.

In England, during the 16th century, leather entered a romantic period during the time of Elizabeth I and Shakespeare. In the pubs, people drank out of handmade leather mugs, and leather hats and tunics became popular.

In the 17th century leather wallpaper became fashionable in artistically progressive cities such as Florence and Venice, Italy. The Dutch instructed workmen in the installation of embossed leather as wall covering.

Victorian England and the rest of Europe were more interested in ornamentation of leather unrelated to any practical function.

The North American Plains Indians used leather for their tepees, coats and footwear.
Beaded leather moccasins were worn and all great warriors had fantastic clothes decorated
with beads or fringe. Leather was also used for saddles and chaps, holsters and harnesses.
Leather continues to be popular in modern society taking a role in furniture, car interior
upholstery, clothing, handbags and footwear to name a few products commonly constructed
of the durable material.

The Butler Name

The Butler name derives from the old French; Bouteillier; the cup-bearer or the one in charge of the bottles. Bottle and the French equivalent both come from the medieval Latin butticula, a diminutive of buttis, a cask, which is also the origin of the word butt for a large wooden container for liquid (the beer cellar in medieval times would have contained wooden casks, not glass bottles). So the buttery, therefore, had originally nothing to do with butter but was the place of the butts. Only later was the word extended to mean somewhere that provisions in general were stored, perhaps because people did mistakenly make that association.

Through a complicated process that had to do with the loss of gentlemen servants and changes in social organization, the Butler slowly rose to be in charge not only of the buttery, but also of the ewery (where the napkins and basins for washing and shaving were kept) and the pantry (which did supply the bread, butter, cheese and other basic provisions), and later still he took over the cellerer's duties of looking after the wine, which indeed became one of his principal duties. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the Butler reached his full flowering as head of the male domestic servants, in larger households sometimes having a whole suite of rooms dedicated to his various functions. In the twentieth century, social change meant he almost vanished as a breed. In our modern age the Butler has been reinvented as a kind of Swiss-Army- knife, all-purpose household manager, often the sole permanent servant, as much required to organize his master’s travel arrangements and supervise redecorating the house as he is to serve the wine at formal dinners.

Butler is one of those words which has survived almost unchanged in the language for several hundred years, but whose meaning has progressively changed along with his duties. But as few of us encounter a real Butler these days, even fewer than in his heyday, our understanding of the word is stuck in a fantasy world of Wodehousian invention.

The Salary Range of a Modern Butler

Salary is usually based on a number of factors such as the amount of experience and/or formal training and the duties and hours included in the job description. Butlers usually earn a salary between $50.000 and $150.000 annually, plus benefits. A Butler can be a live-in or live-out employee.

The Victorian Era (1839 - 1901)

The Victorian era corresponds with the reign of Queen Victoria in England from 1839 to 1901. The period is beloved for its attention to high morals, modesty and proper decorum, as inspired by the Queen and her husband, Prince Albert. The Victorian era was also an optimistic time in which scientific and industrial invention thrived. Developments in printing produced a proliferation of Victorian scrap art, cards, and magazines. The importance placed on civic conscience and social responsibility engendered notable developments toward gender and racial equality, such as the legal abolishment of slavery in America. In addition, humanitarian and religious organizations such as the Salvation Army reflected the Victorian concern for the poor and needy of the period. Poverty was overwhelming.

In 1901, when the British population was 38 million and every middle-class home had at least one servant, there were 1.7 million women and 140,000 men in domestic service. Even a modestly prosperous household could expect to retain the services of a general domestic servant, and mostly these were young single women. In fact, right up until the start of the First World War, domestic service was the largest single occupation for women. However, it was fading in popularity by 1891. The hours worked were very long, the work was arduous and often lonely and it did not provide the freedom which was available to factory and shop workers. Large households could expect to employ dozens of servants such as; Butler, UnderButler, Housekeeper, Cook, Footman, Ladies Maid, Kitchen Maid, Stillroom Maid, Housemaid, Coachman and Groom.

A History Lesson

Readers of historical novels are familiar with some of the servants that large establishments employed to do all the work required to keep the place running smoothly. Large estates had an army of outdoor servants (gardeners, gamekeepers, and grooms) and an equally large army of indoor servants. The number and kinds of servants varied depending on the social status of the employer and the size of the estate.

Male servants ranked above female servants and non-liveried servants, those who did not wear uniforms, ranked above those servants who did. The highest ranking male servant (who in some ways was more a professional employee than a true servant), was the Land Steward. He was often the son of a minister or businessman. Some Land Stewards were attorneys and had their own homes and own businesses on the side. The Steward was the manager of the estate. He hired and fired workers, settled tenant complaints, saw to the harvesting of crops, managed the timber, collected the rents and kept all the financial records. Very wealthy men with more than one estate had several Land Stewards.

A few, very wealthy homes employed a House Steward. The highest ranking male house servant was the Butler. The Butler's duties varied depending on the size of the house. He was in charge of the wine cellar and in the days before refrigeration, that was a delicate task. He was in charge of the silver and gold plate, china, and crystal. He supervised the cleaning of this valuable silver and gold and guarded it against thieves. As time passed, the position of the Butler gained more and more prestige until he became the top servant in Victorian times - in charge of the men and women underservants. While the Butler did not wear livery, he did alter his clothing slightly while on duty - he wore a black tie rather than a white one for instance. It would not do to mistake the Butler for a gentleman.

The highest ranking male house servant, next to the Butler, was the valet. He cared for his employer's clothing, shined his shoes and boots, did the hairdressing and barbering and made sure the gentleman looked good. A valet had to be well-dressed himself, but was not to outshine his employer. When the gentleman went shopping or traveling, the valet went along since there were men who literally could not dress or undress themselves without assistance (those regency coats and boots were tight!).

The highest ranking indoor liveried servant was the footman. Footmen did many jobs around the house - both indoors and outside. Inside, he laid the table, waited at table, served tea, answered the door and assisted the Butler. Outside, he rode on the carriage, opened doors, served as an escort when a lady paid calls, and carried torches to deter thieves when the lady and gentleman went out at night. The footman carried letters to and fro and special footmen called "running footmen" ran in front of or beside a carriage. These running footmen had mostly died out by the time of the regency, but in their prime, they were colorful characters, both literally and figuratively. They often wore very bright and luxurious livery and some noblemen would organize footraces between their running footmen. The qualifications for being a footman were good looks and a good physique. Their livery was knee breeches, often plush ones with silk stockings (footmen had to have good legs) and coats of satin and velvet with starched shirts. Footmen had to powder their hair - a custom that did not die out among the Buckingham Palace footmen until Prince Philip put a stop to it. He thought it was unhygienic.

A page was a young boy who was sort of an apprentice footman. He performed odd jobs and tasks and was put into livery to stand around and look good when the lady chose to entertain. Sometimes the page was a young black boy who was put into an especially fancy livery and treated almost like an ornament.

Women servants did not rank as high as men and were not paid as much even though their work was often harder. A footman carried letters, but a chambermaid often had to climb flights of stairs with loads of coal for the fire or cans of hot water for the bath.

The highest ranking woman servant was the housekeeper. She kept the keys to all the storage closets and supervised the maids and cook. She served as the Butler's right hand helper. She kept books and household accounts and ordered food and supplies. She very much ran the house.

The next highest woman servant is the personal maid. She dressed and undressed the lady, cleaned, pressed and mended rips in clothing and did the lady's hair. In the Victorian age, when clothing was very heavy and elaborate (and buttoned and laced up the back) a women could literally not get dressed or undressed without assistance just like the regency fops with their tight coats. Personal maids also looked after the jewelry and served as a companion and confidante. It was very much the thing to have a personal maid who was French, but if a lady could not find a French maid, an English personal maid who could speak a few French phrases was almost as good.

The cook was considered to be of better quality if she had trained with a male chef. Not many people were wealthy enough to afford a male chef, so they searched for female cooks who had trained with men. The cook was the dictator of the kitchen. The cook had many kitchen helpers to assist her in the massive amounts of cooking that had to be done. There were always scullery maids (the lowest of the female servants) whose job it was to clean the pots and pans. These poor girls spent their days with their hands in hot water and harsh washing soda. After a large party, there could be hundreds of greasy pots and pans to clean before the girls could go to bed.

There were several kinds of maids - chambermaids, parlor maids and maids-of-all-work. These young women were the ones who swept, dusted, polished, cleaned, washed, fetched and carried from early morning till late at night. The schedule of the week for maids has them working from 6:30 am till 10:00 pm with one half-day off a week. They had to do all the cleaning and polishing with none of the labor saving devices we take for granted. There was no such thing as polish for instance. Furniture polish was made from linseed oil, turpentine and beeswax. Carpets had to be brushed by hand, lamps had to be cleaned and filled and fires had to kept lit and tended. This necessitated maids lugging large amounts of coal up flights of stairs to all the fireplaces, and a large estate could have many, many fireplaces. The sheer amount of work involved in a maid's job is difficult to imagine. Maids wore two kinds of clothing. In the mornings when most of the heavy work was done, they wore cotton print dresses and heavy aprons. Later in the afternoon, they changed into black dresses with ruffled aprons and caps with streamers. By Victorian times, all but the wealthiest had given up footmen and the maids answered the doors and announced visitors.

The era of large estates and many servants died out after World War I. For a long time, a job as a servant was the only one a respectable young woman could get, and after jobs in offices and factories became available, few young women or men wanted to spend long hours working for little money and little chance to have a life of their own. More job opportunities, smaller houses and more labor saving devices finally put an end to the huge numbers of servants who used to work in stately homes.

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the
villagers that he would buy monkeys for $10 each. The villagers seeing
that there were many monkeys around, went out to the forest, and started
catching them.

The man bought thousands at $10 and as supply started to diminish, the
villagers stopped their effort. He further announced that he would now buy
at $20. This renewed the efforts of the villagers and they started catching
monkeys again.

Soon the supply diminished even further and people started going back to
their farms. The offer increased to $25 each and the supply of monkeys
became so little that it was an effort to even see a monkey, let alone
catch it!

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he
had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would now buy on his
behalf.

In the man's absence, the assistant told the villagers. "Look at all these
monkeys in the big cage that the man has collected. I will sell them to
you at $35 and when the man returns from the city, you can sell them to
him for $50 each."

The villagers rounded up with all their savings and bought all the monkeys.
Then they never saw the man nor his assistant, only monkeys everywhere!

Muslims have 'victim mentality'

British Muslims are guilty of a "victim mentality" and should take greater responsibility for their lives, a Muslim Labour MP has argued.

Sadiq Khan also said more British Muslims must tackle sexism, learn English and condemn forced marriages.

The representative for Tooting, south London, made his comments in a report for the Fabian Society think tank.

Muslim youth organisation the Ramadhan Foundation said Mr Khan was out of touch with grassroots Muslims.

'Liberal anxiety'

In his report, entitled Fairness, Not Favours, Mr Khan said: "We need to take more responsibility for our own families, ignore those who propagate conspiracy theories, and above all we need to leave behind our victim mentality.

"We must all agree that honour killings are murder and forced marriages are kidnapping. These traditions have no place here or anywhere."

He also claimed that Muslims in Britain are pre-occupied by foreign policy and not concerned enough about day-to-day political issues.

"Muslims need to recognise childcare is as important as Kashmir," he said.

Assistant whip Mr Khan said there was no question that people coming to live in Britain should learn English and he criticised "liberal anxiety" about the issue.

"The requirement to learn English is not colonial. English is a passport to participation in mainstream society - jobs, education and even being able to use health services," he said.

"Having poor English creates multiple barriers to work; it decreases your confidence, makes it harder to gain other skills and qualifications and increases the likelihood of unemployment and your withdrawal from the labour market."

Islamophobia

Mohammed Shafiq, chief executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, said the "real issues" holding Muslims back were "poverty, crime, racism and Islamophobia".

He said: "We do not have a victim mentality but are victims of this government's failure to deal with real issues, issues around poverty, tackling the underlying causes of why there is terrorism in this country."

He said the Ramadhan Foundation had a long history of opposing forced marriages and so-called honour killings.

Mr Shafiq added there was no conflict between a concern for the fate of Muslims abroad and an awareness of the domestic political issues of Britain.

However Shaista Gohir, director of both Muslim Voice UK and Muslim Women's Network UK, agreed that more needed to be done by Muslims to tackle sexism, forced marriages and honour killings.

She also agreed it was important for British Muslims to speak English.

Ms Gohir, who is a government adviser on Muslim women, told the BBC: "Not being able to speak English is not only a barrier to integration but is also disempowering for individuals, so I agree that Muslims who do not speak English need to make more of an effort to learn."

But she said it was an over-generalisation to say Muslims had a victim mentality.

She said: "Muslims are facing increasing amounts of Islamophobia and discrimination so, if some have a victim mentality, can you blame them?"

"Yes Muslims do need to take greater responsibility of their lives but so do other communities that suffer problems such as under-age drinking and increased gun and knife crime."

In July the government launched a package of measures responding to calls from Muslim communities to support the promotion of citizenship and shared values, said a Department of Communities and Local Government spokesman.

Rhys murder accused can be named

A teenager accused of murdering schoolboy Rhys Jones can be named for the first time as Sean Mercer.

Mr Mercer, of Good Shepherd Close, Croxteth, Liverpool, has turned 18 and loses the legal protection which bans publication of the names of juveniles.

He has denied murder and is set to face trial next month, along with six others, in connection with the shooting in August last year of the 11-year-old.

Rhys died after being shot as he walked home from football practice.

James Yates, 20, of Dodman Road, Croxteth; Gary Kays, 25, of Mallard Close, and Melvin Coy, 24, of Abbeyfield Drive, both West Derby, Liverpool, are accused alongside two boys aged 16 and 17, who cannot be identified.

All have been charged with assisting an offender.

The sixth, another 17-year-old boy, has been charged with assisting an offender and possessing an illegal firearm and ammunition.

In separate proceedings connected to the case, Mr Mercer's mother Janette, 48, of Good Shepherd Close, Croxteth, is charged with perverting the course of justice alongside the parents of accused James Yates - 48-year-old Francis Yates and Marie Yates, 50, of Dodman Road, Croxteth - and James Hughes, 22, of Willow Way, also Croxteth.

Woman's beaten body found in cafe

The badly beaten body of a woman has been found in a cafe.

Police were called to the restaurant in the London Bridge area of south-east London when a delivery man found the body on Monday night.

The woman, aged in her 50s, had been beaten about the head and body with a blunt instrument, police said.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. A police spokesman said the victim and the suspect are believed to have known each other.

The victim, who was found in a cafe in Bermondsey Street, has yet to be formally identified.

Illegal blue badges cost £500,000

Drivers parking illegally in spaces for disabled motorists are costing Birmingham £500,000 in lost parking fees each year, council chiefs said.

The city council has vowed to take tough action against those caught, threatening fines of up to £1,000.

Hundreds of people had already been caught, council leaders told an investigation by BBC's Inside Out in the West Midlands.

A blue badge can only be displayed if the permit holder is using the vehicle.

Criminal record

Transport chiefs said the most common misuse was people using badges awarded to their relatives, without the relatives being in the car.

However, people had also been caught using fraudulent badges.

Currently, wardens only have the powers to tow away the offending vehicles and to issue a fine of £140.

However, the city council said it would now start using private prosecutions to bring people to court, which would allow them to impose higher fines and leave the drivers with a criminal record.

Extra patrols will also be out on the streets catching those flouting the law.

Gatwick Airport put up for sale

The UK's second-largest airport, Gatwick, has been put up for sale by its owner BAA.

The move comes four weeks after the Competition Commission said BAA may have to sell three of its UK airports because of market dominance concerns.

Several firms are said to be interested in buying Gatwick, which has been valued at £1.8bn by regulators.

Potential bidders include Australian company Macquarie, Germany's Fraport, and the owners of Manchester airport.

Virgin Atlantic said it would also be interested in bidding as part of a consortium.

"We are delighted that BAA has ended the uncertainty over Gatwick's future," said Steve Ridgway, Virgin Atlantic chief executive.

"Virgin Atlantic would relish the opportunity to bid for Gatwick as part of a consortium and inject our customer service expertise into any future running of the airport."

However there were misgivings at the Unite trade union, whose national officer, Steve Turner, said: "It simply beggars belief that a 'For Sale' sign can be hung across the country's second largest airport.

"Gatwick is a core component of the national infrastructure and an essential part of the UK's aviation sector, yet it is to be flogged off with little care for the wider social impact."

Sale process begins

Last month, the Competition Commission said in an interim ruling that BAA may have to sell three of its seven UK airports.

BAA 'should sell three airports'
Although the commission does not release its full report until next year, it added that BAA may need to sell two of its three airports in the South East - Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted

BAA, which is owned by Ferrovial of Spain, ruled out selling Heathrow, which leaves Gatwick and Stansted.

The company also operates airports at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen in Scotland, and Southampton in southern England.

In a statement, BAA said it had decided to begin the process of selling Gatwick "immediately".

The Civil Aviation Authority has just increased the amount Gatwick - where 35 million passengers passed through in 2007 - can charge in landing fees.

But it is operating on one runway and approaching full capacity.

'Current uncertainty'

"Gatwick has long been an important and valuable part of BAA and the decision to sell was not taken lightly," said BAA chief executive Colin Matthews.

"We believe that the airport's customers, staff and business will benefit from the earliest possible resolution of current uncertainty.

Future of British airports

"When the Competition Commission published its provisional findings, we said that we would be realistic in our response, though we disagree with the commission's report and the analysis on which it is founded."

Mr Matthews told the BBC that the market would set the price that the airport would realise.

He also told the BBC that selling the airport was "the right thing for BAA, for Gatwick, to do".

Following BAA's announcement, the Competition Commission issued a statement saying that it had provisionally found competition problems at each of BAA's seven UK airports, with adverse consequences for passengers and airlines.

"As a result we are now consulting on the appropriate remedies set out in our remedies notice," it said.

"If these are implemented as proposed, we will require BAA to sell two of its three London airports, and also either Edinburgh or Glasgow airport."

'Monopolistic grip'

The commission said its investigation was continuing and its final report would be published in early 2009 - focussing on both the competition issues and the appropriate remedies.

"We will, of course, take account of any action by BAA in the meantime which may impact the competition problems we have provisionally identified," it added.

Meanwhile the Conservative party said it welcomed the BAA decision to sell Gatwick.

Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers said: “For over a year, we've been calling for BAA's monopolistic grip on airports around London to be broken up so we welcome steps to sell Gatwick.

"We will continue to keep the pressure on BAA to ensure it dramatically improves the quality of service it gives customers which may mean Stansted should be sold as well.”

Budget airline Easyjet said Gatwick was a "local monopoly" and called on any reform of airport regulation to "put the needs of customers first".

And sector rival Ryanair said: "This morning's announcement... is just the latest attempt by the BAA monopoly to get itself off the hook of the Competition Commission's recommendations."

Rebels keep up pressure on Brown

Pressure continues on Prime Minister Gordon Brown following the resignation of one of his ministers amid demands for a leadership contest.

George Howarth, one of the rebels calling for a contest, said he was the most unpopular prime minister since wartime leader Neville Chamberlain.

He told BBC Two's Newsnight: "We can't allow that situation to continue."

But minister Shaun Woodward said voters would be "utterly bewildered" by the timing amid the global credit crisis.

On Tuesday, Scotland Office minister David Cairns quit, saying the time had come for a debate on the leadership.

Timing 'appalling'

Mr Howarth, a former minister, said of Mr Brown: "He's so unpopular that no one can remember a time since Neville Chamberlain, after Hitler invaded Norway, that anyone was so unpopular. And we can't allow that situation to continue."

He said that the timing of the revolt against the prime minister was "in many ways appalling" but said that "wasn't of our making".

"I didn't leak the letters that said we wanted a leadership contest. Others who did that may have to answer for their actions at some point in the future," he said.

Mr Howarth denied that a plot to unseat Mr Brown was under way, insisting that he had not known Mr Cairns was planning to resign.

Cabinet Office minister Phil Hope told BBC Radio 4's Today programme Mr Howarth's comments were "extraordinary" and he was a "bit puzzled" by the rebels' stance at a time the government needed to concentrate on the economy.

He added: "I hope there won't be more resignations. I hope people will stop distracting us from the task in hand, which is to respond to the real problems people are facing in our constituencies up and down the country."

Plot denied

Northern Ireland Secretary Mr Woodward told Newsnight: "We are not interested in having a debating society about the leadership right now.

"What we are into is allowing the man who became leader of our party and prime minister last year to get on with the job."

Mr Cairns' former boss, Scottish Secretary Des Browne, has meanwhile warned potential Labour rebels there is no alternative to Mr Brown's leadership.

Mr Browne, who is also the defence secretary, said Labour's conference, which gets underway in Manchester at the weekend, would provide an opportunity to persuade voters it had the right policies for running the country.

He told the BBC's Good Morning Scotland he "deeply regretted" Mr Cairns' departure but insisted he was wrong about Gordon Brown, saying the PM was the best qualified to lead the country through difficult economic times.

"While it is undoubtedly the case that people have other views, the party's position is that we should support our prime minister in government," said Mr Browne.

'Disappointed'

The BBC's political editor Nick Robinson, said calls for a leadership contest were being echoed, in private, up to cabinet level and there were some cabinet ministers who believed Mr Brown had to go.

But he added there was a big difference between talk and action and Mr Brown could survive as long as no major figure stood against him.

Mr Cairns, the MP for Inverclyde, is the first minister to resign since rebel MPs began calling for a leadership contest last week.

But he denied being part of a plot and said he had tried to advise rebel Labour rebels against requesting nomination forms for a leadership contest. Labour's ruling National Executive Committee has refused the request.

Mr Brown told Mr Cairns he was "disappointed" by his decision to leave the government.

In a letter, the PM said: "I do not agree with you that this is the time at which the Labour Party should be focused on internal debates."

Cabinet ministers including Alan Johnson, Jack Straw, Alistair Darling and Harriet Harman have rallied round Mr Brown and urged party unity.

UK unemployment total rises again

The number of people out of work in the UK rose by another 81,000 between May and July, to 1.72 million, according to government figures.

That took the official unemployment rate up from 5.3% to 5.5%.

The number of people claiming jobseeker's allowance also rose, by 32,500 to 904,900 in August, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.

In a further sign of the economic slowdown, the number of people in work and the number of vacancies both fell.

"Today's figures show that unemployment is starting to accelerate and it now looks very likely that total unemployment will reach two million during 2009," said the TUC's general secretary Brendan Barber.

"It is clear that deflation is a much more pressing threat than inflation, and interest rates should be cut," he added.

Earlier on Wednesday, the TUC warned that the number of people out of work for a year or more could almost double by the end of 2009.

The increase in the claimant count was the seventh in a row and was the biggest monthly rise since December 1992 - during the UK's last economic recession.

The past few months have seen a steady flow of big redundancy announcements at employers such as major house builders and financial services companies affected by the credit crunch.

More recently there have been job losses at Ford, travel firm XL and the investment bank Lehman Brothers, while the nationalised mortgage bank Northern Rock is in the process of shedding 1,300 jobs.

The ONS revealed that the rising unemployment trend has accelerated sharply in the past few months.

In the three months to July 138,000 people were made redundant, up from 28,000 in the three months to April.

"The biggest jump in unemployment for 16 years shows that the weakness in the real economy is feeding through into the jobs market," said Andrew Goodwin, from the Ernst & Young ITEM Club.

"Falling employment and vacancies point to further increases in unemployment over the coming months.

"It is clear that employers' demand for labour is weakening in the face of the economic slowdown and the likelihood is that unemployment will rise further in the months ahead," he added.

The ONS also revealed that in the three months to July, the number of people in work fell by 16,000 from the previous quarter, to 29.54 million, though this was still 333,000 higher than a year ago.

Likewise, the employment rate fell by 0.2 percentage points from the previous quarter to 74.7%, but this was still 0.2 percentage points higher than during the same period last year.

Down's test miscarriage warning

The number of healthy babies lost as a result of Down's syndrome testing is "unjustifiable", a charity has claimed.

Down Syndrome Education International estimates two healthy foetuses are miscarried for every three found to have the condition.

Screening is offered to every woman, and more invasive tests - which can cause miscarriage - to those found to be "high risk".

But the research was condemned as 'unhelpful' by another Down's charity.

Down's syndrome is a genetic condition caused by a baby having an extra chromosome.

Babies with the condition often have learning difficulties and can have serious heart problems, although many people with Down's have a long lifespan and can live semi-independently.

For these reasons, the charity, which supports parents raising children with Down's syndrome, is firmly against the idea of genetic screening, and the subsequent abortion of foetuses which test positive.

Its own analysis suggests that, in an average year in the UK, screening confirms 660 foetuses with Down's. Most women given these test results opt to abort the pregnancy.

Most women are initially offered either a blood test or an ultrasound test to look for signs of Down's in the foetus.

Needle test

A positive test at this point does not mean Down's is highly likely - in some cases, only one in 20 women who screen positive actually have an affected baby.

To confirm or rule it out, a further test is offered - either amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, both of which use a fine needle to take tissue or fluid from inside the womb.

However, the charity suggests that the risks linked to these invasive tests, and the high number carried out, lead to 400 miscarriages in pregnancies unaffected by Down's.

Some research suggests that the miscarriage rate following chorionic villus sampling may be as high as 2%, the researchers said, which, if true, would raise that toll closer to 600.

National guidelines now recommend a newer version of screening - the "combined test", which may be more accurate in predicting which women are at higher risk of carrying a baby with Down's.

However, the researchers said that despite a lower number of invasive tests, the heavier reliance of this method on chorionic villus sampling earlier in pregnancy could actually mean an increase in the number of healthy babies lost if the miscarriage rate using this method was closer to 2%.

Frank Buckley, the charity's chief executive, said that many women misunderstood the risks involved, and were not necessarily making an informed choice: "It's not as clean and effective as everyone likes to make out - there should be much more thorough debate about these tests."

'Unfortunate and unhelpful

However, the Down's Syndrome Association, while saying it was "saddened" by the loss of any unaffected pregnancy, was critical of the research.

Professor Jennifer Wishart, said: "The 'two for three' approach taken in the DownsEd research is unfortunate and unhelpful to ongoing debates about screening.

"There has never been any dispute that current diagnostic techniques have associated risk and that women need to be better and fully informed of these risks.

"The 'two for three' emphasis - that two healthy babies are lost for every three babies with Down's syndrome prenatally detected - simply muddies the waters."

The Department of Health responded that the aim of ante-natal screening was to offer women the information they needed to make the right choice.

"The screening programme supports consistent training and information for staff - to ensure that screening is both effective and safe for all women, a quality assurance system has been set up."

They can also listen to several sources at once, such as when the DJ wants to mix a cued track into what is already playing through the loudspeakers. Obviously, clubs are noisy places. On top of the extremely loud music, there is also noise from the crowd combined with the chatting of other people who may be in or around the DJ booth. A first look at the new Mazda Tribute Hybrid might have you asking where the 'zoom-zoom' is. It certainly isn't in the outdated looks, lackluster acceleration, or even in the apathetic braking. In fact, the 2008 Tribute Hybrid actually shares a lot more 'built tough' qualities with its Ford sibling, the Escape, than it does with the otherwise svelte Mazda lineup.

What the Mazda Tribute Hybrid does offer is impressive fuel economy, up to 34 miles per gallon in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. That's a very impressive increase of 12 MPG in the city and a mild improvement of 2 MPG on the highway over the non hybrid Tribute.

Handling is surprisingly crisp and with 155 horses produced by the gasoline-electric engine provide adequate acceleration for city driving but aren't enough to inspire confidence when passing on the highway. Add to this the mediocre braking and the Tribute Hybrid certainly won't appeal to the lead-foot crowd.

The interior of the Tribute features little family resemblance to the esthetically pleasing controls and displays found in the ravishing CX-7 or Mazda6. The gauges are clear and feature blue backlighting, but there's nothing definitively Mazda about the cabin other than the badges.

Seating is firm without being stiff, but the rear seat lacks any kind of fore/aft adjustment making it potentially uncomfortable. Add to that the multi-step process required to fold the rear seats down and the interior of the Tribute feels like an anachronism in a modern Hybrid.

Don't spend a lot of time figuring what to write about. Open the laptop and respond to a blog post, news article, trade publication, or customer question. Take the hundreds of small seeds of articles thrown at you daily and write.

Keep a running list of article topics. I have a spreadsheet of keywords I have researched, search referrals from my Google Analytics, and a running list on a pad of paper. When I sit down to write I randomly grab and write. Volume!

Write Fast

Writing fast is not about typing speed. At 50 word per minute, the average article writing expert can blow the doors off of a 100 word per minute speed typist attempting to recreate Hemingway. By the way, refer back to my opening paragraph--this isn't the way he wrote either. Hemingway and most great writer wrote my way.

Edit, Break-up, Rewrite

Now that you have a lot of writing. Let is sit. Come back and take a fresh look at your articles. Don't waste a lot of editing, but make sure the grammar and spelling is clean. Also, look for more article opportunities and ideas. You will see ways to break-up your articles and spark new articles with rewrites.

This is how you leverage your efforts to produce more quantity and more quality.

Compared to the drinking water in much of the world, tap water in the US, Canada and Europe is a miracle of purity. By that I mean, the chemicals in tap water are often scary to read about, but our tap water isn't likely to infect us with deadly diseases like cholera, which can cause disease within days, sometimes hours, and kills thousands every year.

Still, reports keep coming in that make us doubt it's safe to drink tap water straight from the faucet, day in and day out.

Synthetic organic chemicals, meaning man-made chemicals as opposed to those found in nature, are in nearly every public water supply. That's because any chemical we make and use will eventually wind up in our tap water.

Leaving Footprints - Your Organizational Legacy

The question that I'd like to pose to you, the corporate executive, "Why are you really at your job; is it really the money-really-or might there be a deeper purpose?"

Money is good and power is alluring, however your legacy is what really matters. Sometimes upper level executives get so wrapped up in the now that they forget about the later. Good chance you already have all the money you need, so why stick around?

Your motivators might be:

1. Desire to turn the organization over to family.

2. Desire to be remembered as a conqueror, inspiring leader, builder of something bigger than your self, or various other reasons.

3. Enjoy being engaged in the "game."

4. Desire to be a mentor.

5. Believe they couldn't run the company without you.

6. Just because.

Rule with an Iron Fist

If you enjoy being the conqueror, then perhaps you also enjoy being in control. While being in control is truly an opiate, like other dependencies, the dependent person degrades over time. In a corporate environment this generally leads to organizational failure or the leader becoming a Lord of Lesser Corners-thereby diminishing the Lord's legacy.

The organizational downside of this paradigm is twofold; first that of encouraging the really great talent to find greener pastures elsewhere and handicapping the talent that does stay. A controlling personality tends to find it difficult to truly mentor, coach, and nurture arising talent.

The reason for this is either the misguided belief that nobody else can do it as well or the paranoia of letting go of control. Either way, the result is always a dysfunctional organization.

What's a Conqueror to Do?

My first counsel to an iron fisted executive is, "Protect your legacy!" You have spent years building this incredible organization; now protect it from the forces that are intent on tearing it down. Unknowingly, you could be one of those forces. Sam Walton went back to take control of WalMart, not because he needed the money, but rather to protect his child. Michael Dell recently did the same thing.

How do you want to be remembered; as the fool that built it and then watched it being ripped apart? Or would you rather be remembered as the conquering hero that built it and trained the future generations to make it even greater?

But I'm Old and Tired

A conquering hero is never old and tired; they have simply misplaced their passion. You have been so distracted with the static of micromanaging an organization. Stop playing only defense and get back to your aggressive game of building-today, it is building your organizational leaders of tomorrow.

The Juice

Reconnect to your early passion for building something greater than yourself. Understand that the good old days are gone; however the good old days were nothing more than the times in which you had the greatest passion for building. Kids today are the same as they were when you were young. Sure, they have kilos of body hardware emerging from all parts of their body, but what about your long hair in a world of crew cuts? Okay, their bodies are indelibly marked with various pictures and slogans, but what about your tie-dyes and bell bottoms?

Now is not the time to cocoon and reminisce but rather the time for renaissance. If you look at your organization through the window of your legacy, you will plug into the juice necessary for you to help your upcoming levels of executives to carry on your vision. Understand that they will add to your vision to make it their own. It is this process of up and coming leaders adding to the overlying vision that allows them the have the emotional ownership that will deliver to them the same passion you had in your younger years.

School curriculum corrupted by politics

The school curriculum has been corrupted by political interference, according to a new report from independent think-tank Civitas. The traditional subject areas have been hi-jacked to promote fashionable causes such as gender awareness, the environment and anti-racism, while teachers are expected to help to achieve the government's social goals instead of imparting a body of academic knowledge to their students.

The contributors to The Corruption of the Curriculum show that no major subject area has escaped the blight of political interference. Michele Ledda shows how issues of race and gender ('external criteria that have more to do with biology than literature') trump the love of language in the works of literature that students are given to study. The anthology of poetry produced by the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA) divides poetry into two groups: poetry from different cultures (16 poems) and a further 48 poems from British poets, of which 32 are post-1950:

'The whole tradition of English poetry from its origins to 1914 is represented by 16 poems while modern poetry has three times as many… A British pupil can go through the school system and get the top marks in English and English Literature without knowing that Spenser, Milton or Pope ever existed, but having studied Carol Ann Duffy twice, both at GCSE and A-level. With all due respect to Carol Ann Duffy, she is on the syllabus, not because she is a greater poet than Milton, but because she is more "relevant", dealing as she does with very contemporary issues such as disaffected learners.' (p.18)
Educational apartheid

David Perks reveals, in his chapter 'What Is Science Education For?', that, whilst professing to want to encourage more pupils to study science, the DfES has introduced a new science curriculum that will probably have the opposite effect. The new approach, introduced last September, conflates the three disciplines of chemistry, physics and biology into 'scientific literacy', which has more to do with media studies than hard science. Students are asked to discuss issues such as global warming and GM crops, based on media coverage, and to consider whether or not scientists can be trusted:

'We don't need to flatter young people by asking them what they think about these issues. We do need to help them learn as much as they can about science, so that they can understand what science tells them about the natural world and their place in it… Asking teenagers to make up their minds about anything is pretty daunting. But if you try to ask them to decide if we need to replace the UK's nuclear power stations, you are far more likely to get the question: "Sir, what is nuclear power?"' (p.121)

Three independent reviews of the new science curriculum showed that students who have been exposed to it are less likely to trust scientists and less likely to want to continue science at A-level (pp.116-7). Independent schools are refusing to do the new science GCSEs since, as Dr Martin Stephen, High Master of St Paul's puts it, there is 'a terrifying absence of proper science', and are opting for the IGCSEs, which largely maintain the three separate disciplines, and which state schools cannot take. This is creating what David Perks calls 'a kind of educational apartheid' (p.126), under which pupils at state schools are less likely to proceed to science at A-level and undergraduate level.

Shirley Lawes identifies the same 'educational apartheid' in the teaching of languages. Two years ago the DfES decided that state schools need not teach foreign languages beyond Key Stage 3, with the result that, in over 70 per cent of state schools, languages are no longer compulsory after Year 9. The predictable result is that 30 per cent of all new young modern language undergraduates now come from independent schools (pp.87-8).

Part of the reason that so many young people decide to drop languages is that they are presented as a functional skill with the assumed practical purpose of getting a job. 'They reduce foreign language study to a functional skill that teaches the sort of thing you find in a "get-by" phrase book' (pp.92-3), whereas, taught properly:

'The study of foreign languages has the potential of … providing a window on the world by enriching people's lives and opening them up to other cultures and literatures… learners of foreign languages move beyond their parochial, subjective experiences, to appreciate cultural achievements that have spread beyond national boundaries and are part of universal human culture.' (pp.93-4)
A fraction of the truth

Simon Patterson shows how the teacher's timetable is now so minutely controlled by Whitehall that maths teachers are obliged to return to concepts such as fractions again and again in different years, without ever having the time to ensure that students can grasp them and move on:

'Too often the only residue which remained from their previous encounters with a topic was the memory of not having understood it last year, or the year before, or the year before that.' (p.102)
History without dates

Chris McGovern describes the way in which history is now taught as the New History, that is to say, history without any sense of narrative or chronology, taught through a filter of politically correct perspectives (pp.83-5):

'Children jump around in time between, for example, Vikings and Victorians, Ancient Greeks and Tudors… There is no longer any requirement at all to teach about any specific personality from the past. Nor is there any requirement to teach about any specific event - other than within a world history context for one unit.' (pp.64 & 68)

One leading educational publisher produces a history book tailored to the requirements of the National Curriculum that mentions the Duke of Wellington in connection with Peterloo but not Waterloo (p.75). Unsurprisingly, those who have been subjected to the New History have only the haziest ideas about who did what in history. One survey found that half of young people questioned did not know that the Battle of Britain took place in World War II, and thought that either Gandalf, Horatio Hornblower or Christopher Columbus led the battle against the Spanish Armada (p.61). This ignorance of history has consequences for the stability of a multi-racial society:

'To know the history of one's country is a birthright. It tells us who we are and how we got here. It tells how our shared values came into being. A people that does not know its history is a people suffering from memory loss, amnesia- a damaging illness.' (p.61)
Geography and global citizenship

Alex Standish describes how geography has become a vehicle for teaching global citizenship, with environmentalism as its central theme:

'… global citizenship education is tied to specific non-academic values that tend towards the replacement of knowledge with morality as the central focus of the curriculum. Thus global problems are not presented as issues to be interrogated for truth, knowledge and meaning, with a view to students developing ideas about the potential courses of social and political action. Instead, the solution is to be found in the personal realm and is presented as a given: that people need to adhere to a new global values system that encourages them to consume less, have fewer children, take public transport rather than drive their cars, be less money-grabbing, support charities, and so forth. Such an approach is no substitute for educating pupils to interpret the world for themselves.'

Students are told to 'Think global, act local' - which misses out the national sphere of political action to solve problems. This misleads young people because 'there is no world government, nor global body for citizens to hold to account' (pp.47-8), and the only way in which children can be treated as political subjects in their own right is by 'redefining the meaning of politics from social change to a concern with identity' (p.48). However, by setting out to change the way in which children feel about things, in the interests of 'deep citizenship', teachers may be giving themselves a dangerously wide remit:

'If the personal consciousness of individuals is no longer a place of freedom in education, then they are no longer free moral beings.' (p.51)

In his introduction to the book Frank Furedi defines the corruption of the curriculum as: 'the erosion of the integrity of education through debasing and altering its meaning' (p.5). He describes how issues of pedagogy have been subordinated to social engineering and political expediency, as 'Britain's cultural elites prefer to turn every one of their concerns into a school subject' (p.4). Obesity, sex education, black history and gay history crowd the timetable. Alan Johnson thinks that by teaching environmentalism and persuading children of their impact on climate change we can 'quite literally save the world'.

'Literally save the world! That looks like a price worth paying for fiddling with the geography curriculum!… [However] Those who are genuinely interested in educating children and inspiring them to become responsible citizens will instead look to real subjects, which represent a genuine body of knowledge.' (pp.4-5)

Furedi believes that to confront the problems in education we need to (1) depoliticise education - 'Politicians need to be discouraged from regarding the curriculum as their platform for making statements'; (2) challenge the tendency to downsize the status of knowledge and expose the destructive consequences of 'anti-elitist education'; and (3) take seriously the ability of children to engage with knowledge and provide them with a challenging educational environment (p.10).
