So, you've decided that it's time to build some muscle. After all, who doesn't want that great six-pack? But when it comes to muscle building training, where do you start? Sure, there is lots of information out there: websites, magazines, infomercials . . . but do they really tell you what you need to know?

Some do. In fact there are some very good muscle building training sites if you know where to look. (I'll give you a good starting point later.) But I'd suggest you start by understanding what your body does when you start muscle building, and how to tell if a muscle building training program is working for you.

Inside the muscles, muscle building training is all about anaerobic exercise. Anaerobic exercise is exercise that pushes muscles hard enough that they aren't getting oxygen, and start using other chemicals to function. Anaerobic exercise makes muscle develop differently than they would, using oxygen. It makes them bigger, and stronger, but also less flexible. (Aerobic exercise, where the muscles continue using oxygen the whole time, is good for flexibility and endurance.) Anaerobic exercise can't last long, no more than two minutes. Then the muscles need to switch back to using oxygen, and you lose the strength training benefits. That is why the best muscle building training is done in sets of 'reps,' or repetitions, with a break between each set. Steady two minute bursts of exercise, followed by a brief break, can keep the muscles in a fairly constant level of anaerobic exercise.

So how do you now if you're doing anaerobic exercise? Check your heart rate. Depending on age, anaerobic exercise, which means muscle building training, kicks in at around 150 beats per minute. (Tip: the younger you are, the higher your heart rate needs to be.) You'll know a program for muscle building training is doing what it's supposed to if you're heart beat while you're working gets up over that threshold.

Also, if you are overweight, ignore the weight scale. Muscles are denser then fat, so you can be building muscle steadily, and losing waist line, without losing any weight. Instead, whether you are over or under weight, pay the most attention to your measuring tape.
